About Charles McGee

Charles McGee and his family came to the United States as immigrants from Liberia in 1993 and settled in Northeast Portland. Charles, the youngest of five children, was only seven years old.

His passion for racial and social equity started his sophomore year at Franklin High School as he spurred a system-wide conversation on race by organizing and presenting a petition to the Portland Public Schools (PPS) Board calling for race sensitivity training for teachers.

In 2005, Charles ran for the PPS Board – while attending Portland State University as a freshman – to increase student involvement in district decision-making. Although he didn’t win, he channeled his drive to create change for Portland’s underrepresented students into starting the Black Parent Initiative (BPI) in 2006. Charles continues to serve as BPI’s executive director working to help Black parents achieve financial, educational, and spiritual success and advocating for changes in public policy to address educational disparities for young people of color in Portland schools.

As vice-chair of the Black Investment Corporation for Economic Progress, he advocates for economic prosperity without racial barriers. As a founding member of Just Portland, Charles rallies support for political candidates seeking local elected office.

Charles has shown his leadership by dedicating his life to improving the outcomes for people of color. He believes leadership is providing new solutions to problems that have plagued our community by fundamentally having different conversations. He believes that in order to reach optimal health we need to ensure that each individual in our community has access to holistic health options that ensure mental, physical and spiritual health are at the forefront of building a sustainable future where we all thrive.

As our economy grows Charles understands that our community needs a champion to begin to forge better partnerships between community, labor, non-profits, private and public sector to tackle the issues our community faces right now —while creating a better future for those who inherit this city after us.

He believes we can build such a community and it is why Charles is running for Multnomah County Commissioner of District 2.
