HOURLY WAGE: $12.50-15.00/hr

JOB SUMMARY: The assistant coach will work the SUN Site Manager, head coach, and Extended Day Coordinator to provide opportunities for middle schoolers to learn fitness principles, sportsmanship, and basketball skills and knowledge. The coach will also serve as mentor and role model for young students who desperately need more adults they can connect with at school.


Located in SW Portland, Jackson Middle School is an extraordinary group of students, teachers, and staff dedicated to adolescent development, education, and equity. 27% of Jackson students receive free or reduced lunch, and the school specializes in helping immigrant students and their families adjust to life in the US and navigate the school system by providing academic and social/emotional support. Many of these families come from East Africa and have suffered trauma and stress in their journey to Portland. JMS tries to support and strengthen families in a number of ways, one of which is through the SUN School.

SUN School (Schools Uniting Neighborhoods) at Jackson provides support to students in a variety of ways, the biggest being the after school program. JackSUN offers academic enrichment and recreational learning classes for students after school such as homework club, cooking, ceramics, basketball, etc. In addition, JackSUN provides school supplies and access to other social services for families in need as well as evening adult education classes and community events.


-Teach or assist instructors in running basketball drills and scrimmages
-Supervise groups of 12-18 children, ages 11-13.
-Connect with and inspire young people, especially boys and male-identified youth
-Act as a positive role-model for students. Be their ally, their biggest fan, and hold them accountable.

Any combination of experience and training that would likely meet the following requirements
-Experience providing academic and recreational activities to students in after school environments.
-Experience serving as a role model for young boys and male-identified youth
-Knowledge of basketball and general sports skills, rules, and practice drills
-Ability to effectively work within a strength-based, integrated youth support service delivery system.
