Position Title: HOMEROOM TEACHER (Grade 1)
Department: LOWER SCHOOL

FTE: 1.0 (Exempt)


The Lower School Homeroom Teacher instructs students in all subject areas including math, reading, writing, social studies, handwriting, spelling, social skills, and moral development. The teacher assesses the students’ progress and reports to the parents on a regular basis.

• Commitment to tenets of progressive education including experiential learning, teaching to the whole child, democracy, and inquiry.
• Develop curriculum and coordinate scope and sequence with other grade levels.
• Assess student learning on an ongoing basis and use this information to inform instruction.
• Ability to differentiate instruction.
• Plan for a lead effective lessons in reading, writing, handwriting, math and social studies.
• Know how to use reading records to assess reading levels.
• Expertise in teaching guided reading instruction.
• Co-plan math lessons with math specialist.
• Strong classroom management skills.
• Ability to effectively run a reading workshop, writer’s workshop, and math workshop.
• Establish a positive classroom environment and strong sense of community.
• Willingness to work with specialist teachers to plan for curricular integration (with science, art, music, health, languages, etc.)
• Use a variety of methods to teach.
• Willingness to apply individualized strategies for students with learning differences.
• Willingness to self-reflect and be open to feedback from others.
• Lead a C & C (“Community and Conversation) grouping of mixed age students with a focus on anti-bias work several times a year.
• Supervise students during non-class times.
• Supervise two recesses per week.
• Develop, plan, and supervise field trips (both local trips and overnights).
• Plan and instruct Experiential Days and service learning.
• Screen prospective Lower School students and participate in Lower School Admissions Open House.
• Maintain frequent contact with parents including weekly classroom newsletters, e-mails, blogs, meetings, Back-to-School Night, informal conversations, etc.
• Write parent conference notes in the fall, facilitate student-led conferences in the spring, and write end-of-year narrative reports.
• Work in a cooperative manner with the grade level team teacher, teaching intern, and the teacher’s assistant.
• Serve as a mentor teacher to University of Portland interns.
• Maintain classroom web page and online curriculum map.
• Ability to use technology to enhance instruction in developmentally appropriate ways.
• Pursue professional development opportunities.
• Seek opportunities to expand the limits of one’s own professional knowledge and ability. Support the School’s commitment to diversity and multicultural education.
• Serve on committees and engage in group work as necessary.
• Attend after-school activities and programs (i.e. Revels and Spring Fest).
• Participate in the Lower School overnight retreat at the start of the school year.
• Attend weekly faculty meetings on Wednesdays and community meetings on Friday afternoons.
• Complete required H.R. trainings each year (CPR, first aid, mandatory reporting, handling of hazardous materials, etc.)

The curriculum has been independently designed and carried out by the teachers, based on student needs and interests, progressive pedagogical beliefs and findings from current research.

Supervise students in the classroom, weekly recess duties, and on classroom field trips. Supervise interns and teaching assistants.

Must have strong interpersonal communication skills needed with students, parents, and colleagues. Daily contact with administrators, colleagues and other staff. Contact with the Board of Trustees is intermittent.

• Minimum three years of teaching experience.
• High level of stamina.
• Knowledge of current best practices in elementary education.
• Background in progressive theory and ability to put it into practice.
• A love and understanding of children and the developmental stages they go through.
Knowledge, understanding, and successful exhibition of learning strategies to support all students in learning to use their minds well.
• Knowledge, understanding, and successful demonstration of integrating curriculum and providing connectedness for learners.
• Knowledge, understanding, and successful demonstration of providing a challenging learning experience in a heterogeneous setting.
• Proficiency with technology – photo management, posting things to the web, word processing, programs that work effectively with students.
• Clear communication skills, both verbally and in written form.
• Ability to work collaboratively as part of a grade level team.
• Ability to create a positive, nurturing environment for the student.
• Ability to lift 50 lbs. and walk across campus on uneven terrain.

• Master’s degree in teaching.
• Minimum 3 years classroom teaching experience and record of effective performance.
• Current Oregon Teaching License (part of requirement to serve as mentor teacher to University of Portland interns.)

The Lower School is housed in a building designed to provide a comfortable, spacious, and attractive atmosphere for learning. Most faculty teach primarily in one room. Teachers are expected to be on campus between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. daily and to attend other functions as designated. Full-time faculty is expected to travel to retreats, conferences and workshops as well as accompany students on various experiential activities and overnight field trips throughout the year. There are some mandatory evening and weekend commitments.
