Who we are:
Neighborhood House is here for families facing hunger and homelessness, vulnerable seniors and children who need help in school. Founded in 1905 by the Portland Section of the National Council of Jewish Women, Neighborhood House was the city’s first organization committed to helping the many immigrants who were arriving at that time, and living primarily in South Portland.
What we do:
Neighborhood House assists low-income, recent immigrant and other vulnerable people living in the greater Portland area. Our programs serve disadvantaged children needing help to be successful in school, families facing hunger and homelessness, and seniors needing support so they can remain living active and independent lives.
Neighborhood House's program participants represent a remarkably diverse mix of ethnicities and cultures. To meet the needs of these diverse communities, Neighborhood House offers culturally-specific services for African, Latino, Middle Eastern and Russian immigrants in various programs. We have many bilingual staff who speak Spanish, Russian and Somali and other African languages to effectively reach out to non-English speakers and to insure they feel welcome and are getting the help they need. Job Title: Site Director – Boise/Elliot School
Department: School Age Programs
Reports To: School Age Director
Type: Full Time nonexempt
This position is partially teaching and partially administration. A site director is responsible for managing an on- site before and after school program at one of the schools in which we provide programming. Site directors create a classroom structure and curriculum, work with children before and after school, and manage other staff on site. This position also requires a highly organized self- manager who can keep track of paperwork, licensing requirements and communications with parents, supervisors and PPS employees.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Manage a before and after school program in NE Portland, potentially children ages 5-12 and assistant teachers
Communicate with parents and school officials regularly
Attend all staff meetings and trainings
Develop curriculum and prepare lesson/ activity plans
Become familiar with and adhere to licensing regulations for the program and school rules and requirements
Work with children with a 15 to 1 ratio, assisting with homework and structured group activities as well as supervising free choice and recess
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
At least 2 years of experience working with children in a licensed facility
Knowledge of child development for ages K-12 with documentation to prove such as college transcripts, training certificates, CDA or at least step 9 in the Oregon Registry
At least one year training/ experience in management and supervision of adults or able to get training
Supervise 2 or more staff people
At least 21 years old
Dedicated, reliable, organized with a strong interest in children and/ or education
Have or able to get immediately CPR/ First Aid Certification, Food Handler’s Card, RCAAN certification and Oregon Central Background registry number
Available between the hours of 6:30am- 6:00pm, ability to be flexible
Knowledge of using email
OTHER SKILLS & ABILITIES
Basic knowledge of excel and word and Google Docs (or other similar programs) as well as basic computer and internet skills
Teaching certificate is a plus
Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Child Development, Art Education or related degree is a plus
Ability to fluently speak a language in addition to English is a plus
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret documents. Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints.
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in writing and oral form. Ability in researching, analyzing, and problem solving.
