Dear Faculty and Staff,

It is with great pleasure that we welcome Ms. Yashica Island to our campus this week to begin her position as our new Director of Diversity and Intercultural Engagement. Ms. Island comes to us from Portland State University with a passion and drive for diversity and inclusion work.

Over the past eleven years Ms. Island has professionally supported multicultural student success in various capacities for both public and private schools within K-12 and Higher Education institutions. Her specific professional experiences such as the Upward Bound STEM coordinator at PSU built significant capacity for underrepresented students to develop not only academic success, but a true sense of self efficacy and resilience to overcome barriers of discrimination. Additionally, as the founder of Pacific University’s Student Academic Inclusion and Success program, Ms. Island successfully assisted first generation and other underrepresented college students to persist onto graduation while simultaneously developing a campus climate enriched by cross-cultural understanding, respect, and collaboration.

Please join me in welcoming Yashica to our amazing community. She would love to meet you so please stop by Hagen 204 (the Guild Lounge) and say hello.

Thanks,

Scott
