Parent Mentor-Self Sufficiency

Parents Anonymous of Oregon is seeking mothers to serve as a Parent Mentor to support Child Welfare-involved mothers in Washington County. If you’re a mom who understands how to advocate for social services including TANF and you’d like to help other moms in your community improve their financial circumstances, this job is for you!
This position requires a unique life experience, including personal experience and knowledge of addiction issues and a minimum 2 years in active program of recovery. and personal experience of a DHS TANF case
The Parent Mentor Program matches Parent Mentors with parents accessing Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) in Washington County. The goal of the program is to support each parent as they work toward the ultimate goal of economic stability.
Parent Mentors are role models demonstrating the possibility of change and a healthy life as a self-sufficient parent. Mentors provide system navigation based on a combination of their personal experience and professional training provided by Parents Anonymous. Coaching parents through their case with DHS Self Sufficiency Programs and supporting them in developing healthy social supports are important aspects of this work. The Parent Mentor will be available to consult with DHS staff regarding family engagement and assist in recognizing issues of poverty, addiction and recovery.
Primary duties and Responsibilities:
• Develop a trusting relationship with assigned parents by providing regular contact and support, including attending court and/or meetings with DHS when requested by fathers needing support
• Communicate positively and professionally with DHS staff and work collaboratively to support families in assigned county
• Link parents to child’s school community, encourage relationship building with teachers
• Link parents to opportunities to further their own education
Program: Parents Anonymous of Oregon
Schedule: Monday through Friday, typical hours between 7AM-7:30PM. Weekends off!

Education and Experience Requirements:
A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
• Personal experience and knowledge of addiction issues
• Minimum 2 years in active recovery from using alcohol and other drugs required
• Personal experience of a DHS TANF case, closed for a minimum 1 year required
• Personal experience of a DHS Child Welfare case, closed for a minimum 1 year required
• High School Diploma or GED or high school level writing and reading skills
• Demonstrated success working with and/or having lived experience, specific knowledge, skills and abilities engaging Latino families
• Experience of an open TANF case, in Washington County preferred
• Experience navigating services and systems in Washington County in order to become self-sufficient
• Bilingual in English and Spanish
• Certified Recovery Mentor certificate through ACCBO
• Basic computer skills, including word processing, databases, spreadsheets & email
• Position requires personal transportation allowing for travel within the assigned counties in a timely manner. If driving a personal vehicle for work purposes must have and maintain a valid driver’s license for state of residency, personal auto liability insurance at $100,000/$100,000 level, and a driving record permitting coverage under corporate auto liability policy.
• Must pass a DHS criminal history check
Starting Pay Range:
Parent Mentor: $15.00 - $15.95
Parent Mentor Bilingual (Spanish): $16.35 - $17.39
