Mentor, Puentes Mentoring Program

Full Time (40 Hours a Week) Non-exempt

Grant funded position thru July 2020

Reports to: Youth Services Program Manager


The Puentes Mentoring Program fosters academic achievement by providing school-linked, age appropriate and culturally specific academic support, case management, family engagement, mentoring and skill-building groups to Academic Priority Latinx Students. This position will be based at Gresham and David Douglas High Schools


Provide strengths-based mentoring support to 60 students throughout the school year.
Carry an ongoing caseload of 4-6 individuals (20 annually) who will be receiving case management services.
Comprehensively assess strengths and needs of individuals and families receiving case management services.

Motivate and support youth to set and obtain academic, behavioral and/or attendance goals.

Coordinate with agencies, providers, and resources to support youth well-being.
Interact with school administrators, students and their families on regular basis.
Monitor academic progress and attendance through the school year.
Document all contact made with youth and family in case files and databases.
Provide homework assistance and other appropriate academic support after school for youth at their respective schools on a weekly basis.
Support with recruitment and coordination for summer program.
Participate in school and community events to promote program enrollment.
Provide summer programming for 30 academic priority Latinx youth entering 9th grade.
Plan and facilitate 5 parents workshops throughout the school year to engage families in the educational experiences of their children.
Co-organize 2 college visits and 1 visit to a local business each academic year for students participating in Puentes program.
Co-organize Puente's end of the year reunion for participants of each cohort.
Participate in community partner meetings as indicated by Program Manager.
Participate in El Programa Hispano activities.
Provide quarterly reports to program manager.
Adherence to El Programa Hispano Catolico policies and procedures.
Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.


Must be bilingual (Spanish/English) and bi-culturally competent.
Ability to communicate concisely and effectively, both verbally and in writing in Spanish and English.
Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in social work, education or related field required.
Work experience with the Latinx community, and knowledge and understanding of Latinx culture.
Experience working with middle school/ high school populations.
Experience working with Latinx families.
Demonstrated knowledge of community resources.
Data entry and database management experience preferred.
Strong proficiency in all programs of Microsoft Office.
Demonstrate judgment and discretion in dealing with confidential matters.
Must be able to organize and prioritize work, be proactive, take initiative, follow through, and simultaneously manage multiple priorities to ensure goals are met in a timely manner. High attention to detail required.
Intermediate written and oral communication skills.
Willingness to learn new skills and take on new responsibilities.
Strong analytical and strategic problem-solving skills.
Ability to work well in team setting, as well as independently; be flexible and adapt well to different dynamics in a fast paced work environment.
Ability to work a flexible schedule, which could include some evenings and weekends.
Ability to support organizational and program specific mission and goals.
Ability to lift 40 pounds.
Must have driver's license, access to vehicle and ability to obtain automobile insurance at levels required by agency (100/300/100).
Satisfactory results from civil, criminal and motor vehicle background check required.
