Position Summary
Catlin Gabel School seeks a knowledgeable and experienced Human Resources Director ready, willing, and eager to join a dynamic community dedicated to inspired learning and responsible action. The Human Resources (HR) Director is responsible for all human resource functions for the school. This role partners with school leadership to ensure a positive and constructive employee life cycle, shepherding the employee experience from the recruitment phase to retirement process. The HR Director collaboratively fosters a culture of respect, trust, candid communication, care, kindness, positivity, and teamwork in the school. The position requires knowing and applying best practices and using experience and judgment to plan, develop, and execute goals. The director is a member of the senior administrative team.

Essential Responsibilities & Outcomes
-Ensure that the school’s employment policies and practices reflect the values and mission of the school, are kept up to date to reflect any changes to the law, and meet the school’s needs to recruit, hire, and retain employees.
-Ensure compliance with state and federal employment laws, including anti-discrimination laws, wage and hour laws, OFLA, FMLA and other leave laws, consulting legal counsel as needed.
-Ensure compliance with employee benefits and reporting requirements, including ACA, ERISA, COBRA, EEO and OSHA, consulting legal counsel as needed.
-Ensure appropriate reporting for all federal and state legal responsibility, including OSHA and Drug Testing.
-Provide culturally responsive leadership and guidance to all employees to promote and advance diversity and inclusion efforts in all human resources decision-making.
-Coach all employees to create and maintain a work environment with respect, high morale, accountability, and collegiality.
-Monitor systems at each phase of the employee life cycle to ensure equitable accountability across the organization, including hiring, evaluation (including performance reviews, discipline issues, and plans of improvement), and termination of employees.
-Assess HR systems and make recommendations for possible system changes to ensure they are robust, easy to use, and facilitate positive people management.
-Assess and design employee onboarding process in collaboration with managers.
-Assess and implement professional learning program for managers.

Required Competencies & Qualifications
-BA, MA preferred, with an emphasis in Human Resources or a related field, and well-established progressive responsibility and experience in the area of Human Resource leadership; or any combination of experience and education that provides the necessary skills, knowledge and ability to perform assigned tasks.
-HR Certification (SPHR certification is highly preferred).
-Knowledge and experience with the ability to interpret, apply and disseminate State of Oregon, Federal, and Oregon Department of Education regulations.
-Experience in schools, particularly independent schools, preferred but not required.
-Strong interpersonal and written communication skills.
-Exceptional organization and project management execution experience.
-Creative and strategic problem solving mindset.
-Open to feedback and ideas.
-High integrity and ability to hold confidentiality.
-Strong emotional intelligence quotient, compassionate, self- aware, and the ability to skillfully manage own emotions and those of others.

Supervisory Responsibilities
-Overall supervisory responsibility of the Human Resources team, currently comprised of an administrative assistant and associate director.

Scope of Work
The Human Resources Director reports to the Assistant Head of School with a dotted line and open communication to the Head of School on all employment issues, excluding employment of Head of School, which is managed directly by the Board Chair.

Working Conditions
-Full-time, year-round. Office environment with some required evening meetings. Duties are primarily performed in an office environment. Travel required occasionally. A qualified candidate will be able to work with tight timelines in an ever-changing environment, while showing tireless initiative, attention to detail, optimism, teamwork, positivity, kindness, and risk-taking in collaboration with others.
