Program / Department Summary

Mercy Corps alleviates poverty, suffering, and oppression and works to build secure, productive, and just communities in over 40 countries around the world. The Corporate Finance Department (CF) performs a vital function for Mercy Corps globally, interacting with all other departmental functions of the Agency in order to provide meaningful financial information to employees, management, donors, and regulators. CF includes accounting, payroll, financial reporting and global treasury management functions. CF works closely with the International Finance Department to provide monthly consolidation of over 40 countries’ and several subsidiaries financial information. CF generates Mercy Corps’ and selected related entities audited financial statements, tax filings, debt compliance reports and other miscellaneous external financial and tax reports.

General Position Summary

The Corporate Accounting Manager will support the optimization of the accounting function at Mercy Corps Global Headquarters. The role is responsible for daily operations of the accounting team and the monthly close process for our consolidated accounts.

Essential Job Responsibilities

Manage the monthly close process, maintain close calendars and approve monthly journal entries as required.
Manage data transfers and established routines between the Resource Development (fundraising), Payroll, Timekeeping, Human Resources and International Finance Departments.
Manage the day-to-day entry and posting of accounting transactions. Approve transactions as required.
Review related sub-ledger journal entries including banking transactions, receivables, payables, payroll and fixed assets.
Review monthly account reconciliations.
Manage accounts receivable and the cash application process.
Approve daily cash entries.
Manage the accounts payable process, including vendor setup, coding and budget review of larger invoices, review of payment batches, and oversight of the weekly payment cycle.
Manage the reconciliation of the purchase and travel card programs.
Review headquarter related intercompany transactions for completeness, compliance and accuracy.
Support finance teams as needed and provide input into the testing and design of new processes and systems relating to accounting operations.
Manage the documentation of the accounting processes including updates as processes change and improve.
Provide support and coordination for external financial and regulatory audits and related compliance as required.
Backstop accounting team members as necessary.
Provide accounting support to Mercy Corps stakeholders.

CAPACITY BUILDING
Guide the performance and personal development of accounting team members.
Support recruitment for positions including managing the interview process with the Global Talent team and engagement with other stakeholders.

Accountability

BA/BS in accounting or related field or equivalent work experience is required. Active CPA license is preferred.
5 -7 years of financial management experience is required. Payroll accounting and administration experience preferred.
Demonstrated knowledge of US not-for-profit GAAP, accounting systems and accounting software is required.
Strong Microsoft Office product skills are required.
Proven success in process improvement.
Excellent verbal and written communication, analytical, organizational, and prioritization skills.
Demonstrated capability in working collaboratively.

Additionally, the Accounting Manager will have strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and be able to communicate financial information in a succinct, organized manner. Living Conditions/ Environmental Conditions

This position is located at our US Headquarters based in Portland, OR. There is no relocation allowance available for this position.

Mercy Corps team members represent the agency both during and outside work hours when deployed in a field posting or on a visit/STA to a field posting.
