OES seeks a warm, caring, and organized professional to be its school nurse. The school nurse is a professional position that works under the direct supervision of the head chaplain and director of residential life. This position provides care to students experiencing illness or injury while on campus. The nurse may monitor and dispense routine medications, make referrals to outside providers, administer first aid, or stabilize a child until emergency services arrive. The nurse participates on the First Aid Team for Crisis Response, the Safety Committee, Upper School Concussion Team and the Support Services Team (SST), which includes student counselors, chaplains, and learning specialists. The school nurse functions within the guidelines of the Oregon Nurse Practice Act. In addition to the qualifications detailed below, the successful nurse will be collaborative, tech savvy, possess good judgement, and the ability to maintain appropriate boundaries. As the OES school nurse works closely with boarding students from around the world, intercultural fluency and cross-cultural communication skills are particularly important in this role. This is a full-time, exempt position that typically works the academic year plus two to three weeks. This mid-year engagement will start in early March, continue through the end of June, and then resume on schedule in late August 2020. ● Collaborate with OES Supervising Physician (SP); communicate with SP on an as needed basis; facilitate SP routine and medical orders.
● Complete immunizations process for State of Oregon requirements.
● Complete annual medication administration training for dorm parents and administrative assistants.
● Manage student conditions; keep up to date on student new conditions or allergies; communicate with appropriate constituencies as needed (advisers, trip leaders, counselors, division directors, etc.).
● Manage illness outbreaks and communicate with Health Department.
● Attend monthly Safety Committee meetings and follow up as needed.
● Support Upper School and Residential Program; meet weekly with the director of residential life and US counselor, follow up, as needed.
● Be available during school hours and in the afternoon for dorm students; be available for overnight consultations about dorm students; on-call hours, as needed (per residential program) based on availability and program needs.
● Update attendance and check on sick dorm students; supervise sick dorm students when on campus in their rooms or in the sick room.
● Track chronic medical conditions of dorm students and communicate to appropriate team members.
● Schedule and attend initial and school-day primary care medical appointments for dorm students; facilitate coverage for follow-up appointments.
● Complete all DHS requirements; carry out expired medication protocols.
● Serve on the US Concussion Team.
● Respond to student specific medical needs and emergencies campus-wide.
● Fill out nursing notes on all students treated.
● Communicate with parents about student injuries, or treatment plan as needed.
● Review trip rosters in advance for outdoor program and grade level trips and review medications and conditions with trip leaders and trip medic.
● Fill prescriptions and replace emergency epi pens and inhalers campus-wide; keep First Aid kits stocked and available for trips.
● Update all medications in Nurse’s Office, dorm office, and all three divisions.
● Respond to parent emails and phone calls.
● Respond to faculty emails about students of concern.
● Assist in managing health insurance claims as needed.

● Registered nurse license (RN)
● Two years’ experience as a school nurse
● IT skills: general digital literacy, intermediate to advanced Google Suite, MS Office Suite, database, web applications, video conferencing, etc. as appropriate to job duties
● Experience with and skill in working with students and colleagues from diverse ethnic, gender, socioeconomic, and educational backgrounds and a demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion
● Ability to pass a criminal background check and drug screen

● Five years’ experience as a school nurse

● Discretion, ability to maintain appropriate confidentiality, understanding of FERPA and other legal compliance issues relevant to school nursing
● Communication and interpersonal skills, warmth, sensitivity, and empathy to deal with students and families regarding health concerns
● Ability to remain calm in emergencies, keen powers of observation to assess, triage, or diagnose students’ illness or injury and take appropriate action
● Organizational skills, ability to function effectively on a campus where duties are widely dispersed

● Ability to sit at a computer and keyboard for brief to moderate periods of time
● Ability to communicate clearly
● Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds on an occasional basis
● Ability to move about the OES campus
