OES seeks a curious, creative, flexible, and self-reflective educator to teach history and social studies in its Upper School. The teacher will provide instruction to students across two or three grade levels and bring a breadth of experience designing curriculum and learning activities as well as the ability to recognize and respond to the needs of high school learners.
The History and Social Studies Department motivates students to raise, investigate, and respond to meaningful questions about the human experience so that they may become informed citizens and lifelong learners. Teachers help students develop an understanding of how politics, beliefs, economics, and technology shape our world. Through in-depth topic exploration, classes emphasize research, critical reading, and historical writing skills. The History and Social Studies department continually refines its practices of inclusive teaching, and the ideal new colleague would contribute substantially to that effort, in terms of both curriculum and pedagogy. Strong candidates, furthermore, will bring an innovative, energetic spirit to the classroom and demonstrate a flexible mindset that enriches collaboration and curricular design. Most importantly, they will see students as budding scholars, creators, and engaged human beings.
Other full-time faculty responsibilities include being an adviser to a small group of students, leading a co-curricular activity, going on at least one student trip, and occasional chaperoning duties. In addition to the qualifications detailed below, the successful candidate will have a demonstrated history of innovative inquiry-based pedagogies, integration of technology, and collegial engagement with professional peers, as well as understand and model the importance of involvement in the community. Teacher collaboration is crucial: most classes are designed in grade-level teams that aim to develop skills for lifelong exploration and discovery. This is a full-time, exempt, academic year position that starts in August 2020. • BA or equivalent in history or related field
• Three years’ experience teaching history at the high school level
• IT skills: general digital literacy, intermediate to advanced Google Suite, MS Office Suite, database, web applications, video conferencing, etc. as appropriate to job duties, experience with applicable educational technology
• Demonstrated experience with and skill in working with students from diverse ethnic, gender, socioeconomic, and educational backgrounds and a demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion
• Ability to pass a criminal background check and drug screen
• MA or equivalent in history or related field
• Experience teaching courses from 9th through 11th grade; independent school experience a plus
• Demonstrated successful history with innovation in the teaching of history, technology integration, curriculum design and inquiry-based learning
• Experience in teaching English Language Learners (ELL), particularly international students
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to contribute to strong and positive connections with high school students and to maintain collegial relationships with colleagues
• Ability to collaborate and work effectively on teams
• Knowledge of educational technology, with an openness to innovation and willingness to learn as tools evolve
• Primarily classroom environment, ability to stand or sit to deliver curriculum
• Ability to sit at computer and keyboard for moderate periods
• Ability to lift up to 20 pound on an occasional basis
• Ability to communicate clearly with colleagues, parents, and the public
• Mobility sufficient to move about the campus
COMPENSATION: Faculty salary scale based on education and teaching experience
