If these resonate with you, the department is seeking candidates for the position of Deputy Fire Marshal to perform fire inspections of commercial, industrial, educational, and institutional structures applying fire and life safety requirements to existing conditions.

This classification requires a comprehensive understanding of fire codes, fire behavior and investigation techniques to determine fire cause or potential fire/life safety hazards and code compliance.

The following are considered Essential Duties:
Perform fire inspections of commercial, industrial, educational, and institutional structures.
Review building plans for code compliance. Inspects construction site for compliance with the approved plan design.
Prepare inspection reports and issue fire permits.
Perform fire investigations and prepare reports.
Provide technical assistance to the public on fire prevention issues.

What are the minimum qualifications?
Must have an Oregon Driver's license and a driving record that meets the City of Salem's driving standards.
Successful completion of City background and medical evaluations. Background checks will include, but are not limited to driving record evaluation, criminal records check, and reference check
An Associate Degree (or equivalent) from a state or federally accredited college or university in Code Inspection, Fire Prevention, Insurance Risk, Public Administration, or possess Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (D.P.S.S.T.) Fire Inspector I accreditation.
Must possess certification from the International Code Council (ICC) as Fire Code Inspector I.
Shall obtain accreditation from D.P.S.S.T. as a Fire Inspector I and II, and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Fire Investigator, certification from the ICC as a Fire Plans Examiner, and Oregon Inspector Certification within 24 months of appointment as a condition of employment.

The selection process may include but not limited to an examination that is written, oral or physical and can take into consideration the candidates' education, experience, aptitude, capacity, knowledge, physical fitness, employment length, history and other qualifications to determine the relative fitness of the candidate.

A Chief's Interview to select the most qualified applicant for the position who, through the measurement of knowledge of inspection and fire safety practices; fire prevention laws, ordinances, rules, and regulations; building construction and building systems; fire cause and determination practices; plan review practices; and the ability to communicate verbally in a clear and concise manner; and to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others, will be extended a conditional offer of employment.

Veteran's preference points for those eligible and requesting them will be added to the final combined passing score.

Finalists who successfully complete the screening process will, after a conditional job offer, go through an extensive background investigation, medical and psychological assessment and drug testing. City of Salem is a drug free workplace, including marijuana.
