Who Are We?

In Camp Fire Columbia’s Middle School Program, we work with 270 students in 5 middle schools across the Portland Public and Reynolds school districts. We’re based in schools during the day doing mentoring, making family connections, connecting with school staff, and advocating for and with our students to mitigate inequality of outcomes. After school, we facilitate curriculum and field trips for students using themes such as: identity development, community-building, community-based learning, and social justice. We believe in our students and their families and spend our time building meaningful relationships, mixing in fun wherever possible, and figuring out ways to engage in social justice.

What We Do:

This position is responsible for using a deeply relational approach to implement culturally responsive programming for 30 students from historically marginalized backgrounds or who have been identified as Academic Priority. This position works with students to express care, challenge growth, provide support, share power, and expand possibilities, all through an equity lens, within the classroom and beyond.

Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities

Relationships:

Build resilient connections with students via one-on-one and group mentoring, consistently collaborating with parents to foster student growth, and being a positive representation of the organization while coordinating with teachers, administration, and school partners.

Use relationships to create change and growth with students via: after-school programming, academic progress, advocacy, community activism, field trips, and more.

Recruit and retain a group of 30 diverse students and use conflict as a portal to help youth understand the options they have for relating to each other and the world.

Spend several hours a day mentoring & building trust with students.

Logistics:

Balance multiple priorities such as in-the-moment student needs, data tracking, individual and group mentoring, lesson planning, scheduling and conducting home visits, planning field trips, and monitoring an annual budget.

Model initiative-taking and follow-through by helping connect students with tools, resources, and questions to help them navigate challenges and progress.

Independently manage time and scheduling needs of program management, bimonthly professional development meetings, monthly supervision check-ins, observations, personal reflection, and self-guided learning.

Programming:

Facilitate pre-designed after-school curriculum focusing on: Leadership, Community-Building, Social Justice, and Community-Based Learning.

Build brave spaces and help students push past conflict and perceptions in order to create a culture of inclusion and community.

Ability to facilitate student voice by involving students in co-leading activities, curriculum, and decision-making.

Transport students on field trips rooted in experiential learning (all candidates are required to be considered as insurable drivers for Camp Fire Columbia).



Physical Requirements:

Lift and carry 30 pounds.

Sit and/or stand for long periods of time and maintain engaging energy levels for duration of programming.

Salary and Benefits

Competitive Compensation: $16-$17/hr, 40 hours/week.
