The Director, Retail Merchandising - Brick and Mortar will focus on achieving results through effective leadership of teams with the mission of increased sales and expanded gross margins while maximizing inventory efficiency in all brick and mortar locations throughout the U.S. and Canada. This position will provide oversight, leadership and vision to Columbia Sportswear’s retail brick and mortar merchant organization and coordinates with key members of Planning and Allocation team to deliver business goals. This role will be responsible for creating and sharing a merchandising vision and driving sound long term merchandising strategies that will consistently provide a well-balanced product mix for each store. The in-season execution of these objectives will maximize business profitability and meet the overall objectives of the organization. Leading a team of direct and indirect reports, the Director will provide key leadership and vision in building planning and allocation capabilities that deliver the company’s objectives.
•Select, develop and guide the merchant team through general management oversight of the department. Directly manage senior level managers and directors in merchandising areas and indirectly oversee entire staff.
•Coach and mentor all teams by providing consistent feedback and guidance on best-practices, holding managers accountable for goals and ensuring department is organized to maximize efficient use of resources.
•Build and develop a department structure with viable successors to fill key roles in the merchant organization that will consistently meet the succession needs of the organization
•Collaborate cross functionally with all areas of the business to ensure that strategies and goals are understood and embraced (especially with the Columbia Brand team on building strategy and supporting in-store execution)
•Advises senior leadership and executives on current state merchandising and future state for maximum revenue and gross margin growth.
•Ensures Merchandising department is aware of overall company mission and growth objectives
•Supports Columbia Sportswear cultural and performance values.
•Drive merchandising strategies that maximize sales and profitability.
•Implement new buying processes and initiatives that improve the effectiveness of the merchandising department.
•Oversee Pricing, Promotion and Markdown Optimization program, and insuring its consistent, effective use in pre-season and in-season decision making.
•Maintain consistent price management and markdown optimization ensuring gross margin and profit targets are consistently met.
•Managing the go-to-market process for the factory outlet SMU product offer.
•Responsible for pre-season to execution inventory planning that ensures accurate inventory management and Open to Buy.
•Identify in season sales and inventory opportunities that maximize opportunity and mitigate risk
•Develop consistent marketing campaigns that speak to the Columbia brand as well as to ensure proper seasonal sell-through.
•Bachelor’s degree in business with an emphasis in retail merchandising or marketing preferred.
•Minimum 8+ years of multi-disciplinary team management in retail store merchandising such as Buying, Allocation, Planning and Analysis teams
•5+ years managing high level managers i.e. Directors, Sr. Managers, etc.
•Possess advanced and broad spectrum knowledge of:
•Retail merchandising, buying, product allocation and planning.
•Retail sales analysis, industry standards and trends.
•Retail math and pricing strategies with an in-depth knowledge of open-to-buy and the financial planning process at the retail level.
