Are you a seasoned supervisor with demonstrated success leading, coaching and developing a cohesive and productive team of animal keepers? Do you have extensive experience working with exotic animals – including primates and large carnivores – in a captive setting?
As the Area Supervisor for Africa and Primates at the Oregon Zoo, you will help develop staff, systems and protocols to support the groundbreaking wildlife research and conservation programs at one of the region's most popular attractions.
Under the general supervision of the Curator of Africa and Primates, this Area Supervisor provides direct supervision of all variable-hour animal keepers in the Africa and primate sections of the zoo. Duties include scheduling and coordinating the activities of assigned animal keepers; ensuring that the animal keepers in this area have the necessary training, tools, equipment and supplies to successfully perform their jobs; evaluating staff performance and managing progressive discipline activities, when appropriate; ordering, receiving and distributing materials, supplies and food items; facilitating animal care operations within the Africa and primate section of the Zoo; reviewing, developing and/or revising standard operating procedures or other reports; and conducting or coordinating safety training.
The ideal candidate has proven leadership and supervisory skills in addition to a strong background in animal keeping in a zoo (preferably AZA-accredited) facility. We are looking for someone who can lead and develop a dynamic team with strong personalities. Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated experience coaching staff; evaluating performance; overseeing progressive discipline activities; and developing, documenting and implementing processes, procedures and protocols in a zoo setting.
Evening and weekend work will be required.

A minimum of three years of progressive animal husbandry experience AND a bachelor's degree in a related field (or a minimum of five years of experience AND an associate's degree); OR any combination of education and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the classification duties and responsibilities.
This position requires a valid driver's license with a clean driving history and at least two years of driving experience.
• At least one year of supervisory experience in a zoo setting, including coaching staff and overseeing performance evaluations and progressive discipline activities.
• Experience creating and implementing processes, procedures and protocols in a zoo setting.
• At least two years of experience working in an AZA-accredited facility.
Medical testing and/or immunizations may be required as the duties of this position may require close contact with animal areas and enclosures where animals may be present.
