The role of the Coordinator of African American Student Services is to develop and lead programs that enhance student success and graduation of African American students at Portland State University. A primary focus of this position is on increasing the retention, persistence and successful graduation of African American and other first generation, under-represented students through comprehensive support services (i.e. academic advising, advocacy, assistance with the financial aid process and scholarships, general guidance and community building, etc.).
The Coordinator case-manages a cohort of students who participate in a first year retention program that includes peer mentoring, holistic advising, and a college success course. Additionally, this position will develop academic workshops and co-curricular programming designed to support student success and build a strong sense of community for under-represented students. The Coordinator serves as a liaison, advocate and educator on the unique needs, experiences, and challenges faced by African American college students. The professional in this position works collaboratively with the department and other campus units and external organizations to provide services and activities that are sensitive to cultural differences and that promote access and student success.
