Parents Anonymous of Oregon is seeking mothers to serve as a Parent Mentor to support mothers accessing self-sufficiency programs including TANF in both Marion and Polk County. If you’d like to help other parents in your community develop life skills and become self-sufficient, this job is for you!

This position requires lived experience and knowledge of substance use and a minimum of 2 years in an active program of recovery, and personal experience of a DHS TANF case.

Job Summary:
The Parent Mentor Program matches Parent Mentors with parents accessing Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) in Marion or Polk County. The goal of the program is to support each parent as they work toward the ultimate goal of family stability. Parent Mentors are role models demonstrating the possibility of change and a healthy life as a parent. Mentors provide system navigation based on a combination of their personal experience and professional training provided by Parents Anonymous. Coaching parents through their DHS TANF case and supporting them in developing healthy social supports are important aspects of this work. The Parent Mentor will be available to consult with DHS staff regarding family engagement and assist in recognizing issues of poverty, addiction and recovery. In this role you’ll split your time between your office and in the community working directly with our clients.

Primary duties and Responsibilities:
• Develop a trusting relationship with assigned parents by providing regular contact and support, including attending court and/or meetings with DHS when requested by families
• Communicate positively and professionally with DHS staff and work collaboratively to support families in assigned county
• Link parents to community resources to meet families’ basic needs and health needs
• Link parents to opportunities to further their own education, employment and household management skills

Program: Parents Anonymous of Oregon

Schedule: Schedule: Monday through Friday, typical 8-hour shifts between 7AM-7:30PM. Weekends off!

Education and Experience Requirements:
A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
• Personal experience and knowledge of substance use and recovery
• Minimum 2 years in active recovery from using alcohol and other drugs required
• Personal experience of a DHS TANF case, closed for a minimum 1 year required
• Personal experience of a DHS Child Welfare case, closed for a minimum 1 year required
• High School Diploma or GED or high school level writing and reading skills
• Demonstrated success working with and/or having lived experience, specific knowledge, skills and abilities engaging Latino families

Valued Experience:
• Experience of an open TANF case, in Marion and/or Polk County preferred
• Experience navigating services and systems in Marion and/or Polk County in order to become self-sufficient
• Bilingual in English and Spanish
• Certified Recovery Mentor certificate through MHACBO
• Basic computer skills, including word processing, databases, spreadsheets & email

Other Requirements:
• Position requires personal transportation allowing for travel within the assigned counties in a timely manner. If driving a personal vehicle for work purposes must have and maintain a valid driver’s license for state of residency, personal auto liability insurance at $100,000/$100,000 level, and a driving record permitting coverage under corporate auto liability policy.
• Must pass a DHS criminal history check

Starting Pay Range:
Parent Mentor: $15.00 - $15.95
Parent Mentor Bilingual (Spanish): $16.35 - $17.39
