Clark College is currently accepting applications for a full-time, administrative exempt Director of Mathematics, Engineering, Science & Achievement (MESA) Program in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Department. This position serves as primary coordinator and leader of activities funded or sponsored by the MESA program. The MESA program at Clark College has as its primary objectives the promotion of STEM careers, STEM education, and STEM programs at Clark College to students of color and students of populations underrepresented in STEM fields; the recruitment of those students; and facilitating success, persistence, completion and transfer of those students. The Interim Director of MESA is charged with helping the College achieve those objectives.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:
• Coordinate, plan and lead recruitment/outreach activities, college prep and orientation activities, and events for MESA students, including university campus visits, transfer fairs, scholarship fairs, resume workshops, award ceremonies and graduation celebrations.
• Serve as a resource for MESA students – directing to appropriate resources for tutoring, financial aid, advising, counseling and other services.
• Create a safe, bias-free working environment, which engenders respect for differences.
• Provide mentorship, coaching and support for MESA students.
• Act as liaison for faculty and advisors.
• Recruit MESA students and provide data for student participation in MESA activities.
• Facilitate through exposure, advising and workshops, successful transfer of MESA students to baccalaureate institutions upon Associate’s degree completion – and track such students.
• Collect and report data from faculty and institutional research staff, including success data for MESA students. =
• Analyze, summarize and use data in reports in a clear and engaging manner.
• Attend and actively participate in MESA Interim Directors’ meetings and other activities (including occasional overnights), ensure successful implementation of the MESA program in accordance with MESA statewide office guidelines and serve as primary contact for WA MESA at Clark College.
• Manage the MESA student center and foster a welcoming atmosphere for social and academic purposes to ensure that the center meets the needs of MESA students and facilitates cohort formation.
• Brainstorm, develop and implement initiatives to increase success, retention and completion of MESA students at Clark College, recruitment of systemically non-dominant student populations to STEM programs and, in particular, STEM programs at Clark College.
• Create engaging materials promoting MESA activities for print and electronic distribution.
• Work with counselors and others in feeder school districts to promote STEM at Clark College and STEM in general, especially for students of color and students of other populations underrepresented in STEM fields.
• Coordinate, schedule and publish schedule for MESA study room, tutoring for MESA students and advising for MESA students.
• Develop and promote student-to-student and student group study and mentorship.
• Demonstrate cultural competencies required to work with students from broadly different cultural backgrounds.
• Provide leadership in accordance with the mission, Core themes, objectives and values established by the college.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
• Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university.
• Experience in planning, organizing, and delivering academic support services.
• Experience in project management and program coordination or management.
• Experience working with college students at a post-secondary institution.
• Ability to work well with people of all ages from academically, culturally, and socioeconomically diverse backgrounds.
• Strong writing and communication skills, with the ability to speak in public and with students, community members, industry professionals, faculty and colleagues.
• Degree and/or work experience in a STEM discipline.
• Experience in managing and leading delivery of student support services.
• Experience in creating new initiatives to support, recruit and/or facilitate success of college students.
• Ability to coordinate and communicate cross-functionally.
• Familiarity with organizational, operational, and structural functions of community colleges.
• Ability to teach and model cultural competencies to others.
• Ability to work in a multicultural environment with African American, Latino, Native American, and Pacific Islander undergraduate students pursuing degrees in STEM (science, technology engineering and math) fields; culturally competent, with strong knowledge and ease in working with academically and economically disadvantaged students.
• Ability to work independently, assume responsibility, and take initiative in carrying out assignments; ability to multi-task and perform under pressure with minimal supervision, while maintaining focus and exercising the ability to problem solve, adapt and make appropriate changes (flexibility).
Salary Statement: $66,996 annually
