The Salem Police Department is a full service professional agency with 190 sworn positions and a full complement of support staff. The department is the 2nd largest municipal agency in the state of Oregon, and is located in the capital city of Salem, with a population of over 160,000 residents. Our agency has a full complement of special teams and units to include: SWAT, Bomb Squad, Riot Team, Tactical Negotiations Team, Problem Oriented Police Team (POP), Narcotics Unit, DEA Task Force, Detectives, Motorcycle Unit, Mountain Bike Unit, School Resource Officers, Crash Reconstructionist, Computer Forensics, Mental Health Unit, Training Division, Trauma Team, Civil Investigations Team, and Patrol.

The Salem Police Department is the recognized leader in our region for technology and training to better serve our community and neighboring smaller departments. We have a fleet of state-of-the-art patrol cars with the latest computer technology, camera, license plate reader systems, and weapons platforms. As a Salem Police Officer, you will be issued your needed equipment to include: uniforms, weapons (handgun and rifles), boots, duty gear, iPhones, and more.

Salem is in the heart of the Willamette Valley known for its temperate climate, world renowned food, wine, and outdoor and cultural activities. Centrally located, Salem is 1 hour from the ocean beaches to the west, the Cascade Mountains to the east, and the city of Portland to the north. Minimum Qualifications: •Must pass the NTN Frontline National Test and submit valid test results to the City through NTN's website (valid test results are results that are current or no more than one year old from time of application).
•Must pass the ORPAT and submit valid test results to the City through NTN's website (valid test results are results that are current or no more than six months old from time of application). If you already have a current ORPAT score, you may submit it instead of taking ORPAT again by attaching it to your online City application. Out of state candidates: If you have a valid and current PAT test from another State, you may submit your score by attaching it to your online City application, so long as it is no more than six months old from time of application.
•Possess and maintain a valid Oregon class C driver's license or other state equivalent and have a driving record that meets the City of Salem's standards.
City application and all testing must be completed on or before October 14, 2019. ORPAT/PAT taken after April 14, 2019 will be accepted as current. Applicants are responsible for contacting NTN and arranging for their own testing.

Job Requirements •Be at least 21 years old at date of hire,
•Be a U.S. Citizen or have the ability to become one within 18 months of hire,
•Be a High School graduate or have completed a G.E.D.,
•Maintain a valid Oregon class C driver's license or other state equivalent and an acceptable driving record.
Prior to employment successful candidates must pass:•Drug Test
•Extensive background process
•Pre-employment physical
•Pre-Employment Psychological Exam

City of Salem offers 2%-10% premium pay for a combination of DPSST certification levels, training, and college education. Police Officers who have been with the City for 10 years receive a 3% longevity increase.

There is also 5% bilingual pay incentive for language skills in Spanish, Russian, Vietnamese, Thai, Lowland Lao, Cambodian, Highland Lao (Mien), Hmong, or certification in American Sign Language. Qualified applicants who are bilingual in English/Spanish or American Sign Language are encouraged to apply.

Career police officers with the Salem Police Department have the opportunity to work in a wide variety of specialized units or special teams. Extra duty pay is paid for SWAT (3%), HAZMAT (3%), Field Training Officer (5%), K-9 (5%), K-9 decoy (2.5%), and TNT (3%). Finalists who successfully complete the selection process will, after a conditional job offer, go through an extensive background investigation, medical and psychological assessment and drug testing. City of Salem is a drug free workplace, including marijuana.
