Job Purpose

Lewis and Clark College is seeking an energetic administrator and mental health clinician to serve as the Director of Clinical Services in the Counseling Service. This is a full-time, 11 month position. The Director oversees the day-to-day clinical operations of the Counseling Service, supervises most clinical counseling staff, and supervises front desk operations. The Director is an active and positive member of the Counseling Service Leadership Team, which also includes the Chief Psychologist and the Associate Director for Training. This team sets goals and assesses outcomes for the Counseling Service. The Director for Clinical Services also provides direct clinical services to a caseload of student clients.

What You'll Do

Clinic Coordination

Provides vision, coordination and leadership for clinical services.
Develops, monitors and evaluates clinical services to meet the needs of students.
Oversees the day to day operation of the Counseling Service and provision of mental health care including triage, assessment, case assignment, and crisis support services.
Leads clinical team meetings.
Develops and maintains procedures for responding to student needs.
Collaborates with other Wellness staff to coordinate care systems.
Collaborates with other staff to improve services.

Clinical Services

Provides personal counseling services via individual, group and couples therapy format. This includes crisis intervention, psychotherapeutic, psychoeducational, and developmental counseling.
Provides academic counseling focusing primarily on the psychological issues involved in academic success (e.g. assertiveness, time management, study skills, communication skills, etc.).
Provides assessment and diagnostic services related to developing effective treatment plans and making appropriate referrals of student clients; serves as an advocate and as a liaison in the referral of students to on-- and off--campus resources.
Flexes schedule to fill in for clinical shifts when other staff are out of the office.
Provides consultation services to faculty, staff and students.
Provides professional consultation as part of the Counseling Service’s after-hours mental health consultation service.
Maintains appropriate documentation (e.g. clinical notes) for all services.


Provides administrative supervision and clinical consultation to licensed mental health professionals.
Supervises administrative specialist and front desk operations.
Responsible for recruitment, selection, orientation, training, supervision, and evaluation of these staff.


Collaborates with the Chief Psychologist and Associate Director for Training as members of the Counseling Leadership Team.
Collaborates in the development of Counseling Service weekly staff meeting agenda; facilitates weekly staff meetings.
Maintains and promotes the highest ethical and professional standards; stays current with best practices in the field through continuing education, conference attendance, and professional networking.
May assume the duties of Chief Psychologist on occasions when the Chief Psychologist is absent or unavailable; serves as backup on students-of-concern teams, including performing limited psychological assessments regarding safety concerns.

Education, training and consultation

Provides consultation to other staff on ethical and legal matters as they pertain to client care.
Provides leadership and instruction to staff in the use of electronic health records.
Collaborates in the provision of mental health promotion programming.


Oversees the collection and analysis of data related to clients and clinical services.
Uses electronic health records system to produce regular reports on service utilization, as well as ad hoc reports requested by Chief Psychologist.
Creates an annual report related to clinical services.

Service to the College

May serve on committees and work groups at the division and campus-wide level to support student health, success, retention and graduation.

Must Haves

Master's degree or higher in psychology, counseling, social work, or closely related discipline.
Demonstrated sensitivity and commitment to multicultural issues, and proven ability to counsel and support diverse individuals and groups.
Licensed as a psychologist, social worker, counselor, or marriage and family therapist by the state of Oregon, or eligible for such licensure by the start of employment.
Minimum of three years experience providing clinical services in a college mental health setting
Strong communication and collaboration skills
Strong clinical and supervision skills

Nice to Haves

Doctorate in psychology, counseling, social work, or closely related discipline
Prefer five years of experience in the delivery and/or administration of mental health services
Leadership experience in a mental health setting
Licensed as psychologist in the state of Oregon, or eligible for such licensure by the start of employment.
