The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) currently has a full-time opportunity for a Public Affairs Specialist (Public Affairs Specialist 2) in Eugene, Oregon.

The mission of DEQ is to be a leader in restoring, maintaining, and enhancing the quality of Oregon’s air, land, and water. The Office of Communications and Outreach provides strategic direction and oversight of agency communications and outreach activities, including press and public relations, social media implementation, web content, agency style, brand management, and collateral development.

What you will do!
The Public Affairs Specialist plans, coordinates, and executes communications and outreach for all DEQ activities in its Western Region offices. You will provide information to the public and news media via news releases, informational materials, and web content, as well as develop communication plans with staff. You will use a variety of communication and public involvement tools and practices, including public relations, education and media relations, staff training, and social media approaches. In this position, you will also provide strategic communications analysis planning to the regional staff, including advising staff and managers in communication and public involvement issues and activities; and developing messaging and other communications delivery materials for a variety of issues to ensure public understanding of complicated and/or controversial issues.

This is a full-time, AFSCME represented position.

What are we looking for?

Bachelor’s degree in Business or Public Administration, Public Relations, Marketing, Journalism, the Behavioral or Social Sciences, or a related degree, AND 2 years of professional level experience in public relations or affairs (or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience).
Ability to use individual initiative and judgment when interpreting agency policy in developing communication strategies and plans, and responding to emergency needs.
Professional-level writing and editing skills, excellent time management and organizational skills, and effective skills in organizational dynamics and the facilitation of meetings.
Ability to understand and communicate complex technical or scientific information to lay audiences in multiple formats.
Experience with communication and public involvement, and experience working with the media.
Familiarity with a wide variety of communication tools, including social media.
Experience in planning public meetings, and experience in project management involving multiple contributors.
Ability to work on tight deadlines in intense environments with multiple shifting demands; a high level of adaptability and attention to detail.
Experience working in communications in for a natural resources or environmental organization, agency, or company.
