This is an exciting opportunity to work for one of the top law firms in the United States and the region. Stoel Rives is seeking a Business Intake & Conflicts Compliance Counsel position. Working out of the Portland, Oregon office is preferred. This position will build and implement a new Conflicts clearing function at the Firm by, among others, advising the Firm’s lawyers, paralegals, and other staff on conflict of interest issues. The person in this position must be comfortable in a highly visible role, working directly with Firm lawyers, and making and communicating challenging decisions and managing multiple complex situations. This position exists to establish, build, and implement a new Conflicts clearing function at the Firm. This function will conduct independent reviews of all potential new Firm business and lateral attorney and staff hires. This position will advise the Firm’s lawyers, paralegals and other staff on conflict of interest issues and draft consent letters.
This position will work collaboratively with other members of the New Business Department to analyze all new business and assist with ongoing risk management initiatives. The New Business Department collaborates daily with other Firm departments to maintain accurate client records, respond to requests for information/proposals, and publish external legal updates.
By utilizing a solid understanding of basic litigation concepts, business organizations and financing concepts, this position will be called upon to make and communicate difficult decisions, handle multiple complex situations, and produce high quality work while under pressure. Through intentional, directed interaction with all Firm attorneys, this position will sustain a working knowledge of all Firm practice areas to ensure that all conflicts analysis and risk management advice is informed by the nuances of a varied civil practice.
This position reports to the Firm Counsel/Chief Operating Officer.
1. Conflicts Analysis
- Identify, report, and address conflicts of interest associated with new business. Assist attorneys in reviewing and interpreting conflicts reports to Firm attorneys and staff to ensure proper conflict clearance decisions.
- Review Outside Counsel Guidelines for content, making recommendations and troubleshooting conflicts issues. Study and stay current with laws and rules pertaining to conflict of interest in each jurisdiction where the Firm is located.
-Maintain records for tracking and timely completion of all conflicts review projects.
2. Consents and Engagement Letters
Work collaboratively with attorneys and department staff to draft, track, and review conflict of interest consents, and engagement letters.
3. Ethical Walls
Construct, monitor, and review exclusionary, inclusionary, and client-requested ethical walls.
4. New Hires
Work collaboratively with Firm Counsel and department staff to review and resolve potential conflicts associated with new lawyers and staff.
Conduct professional legal staff training on current ethical practice issues.

Experience with Elite Conflicts Management tools and IntApp Open preferred. Must have advanced knowledge of the rules of professional responsibility in each jurisdiction where the Firm is located.
Ability to type on a computer keyboard in a sitting position; ability to operate telephone, photocopy, fax, and other office equipment. Requires prolonged sitting, occasional standing, bending and lifting. Must have ability to read and comprehend hand written and typed notes or correspondence. Must have ability to be resourceful in seeking out information, anticipating consequences, and making sound judgments and decisions; ability to effectively prioritize workload; ability to analyze, initiate action, and take responsibility for outcome.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Juris Doctor degree required, and at least 1-3 years’ experience in a civil practice. Bar membership in the jurisdiction of at least one Firm office location.
NORMAL WORK HOURS
This position is exempt and normal work hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
