Environmental Health Services (EHS) programs serve to protect the public from environmental health related issues: food, water, vector borne diseases and environmental health threats and disasters. The nature of the work is complex due to the numerous environmental health concerns and regulations and the high profile of the activities conducted. The programs included in this workgroup include: Inspections, Vector Control, Vital Records, Food Handlers, Tobacco Control and Prevention, and Healthy Homes & Communities. The EHS unit analyzes local environmental health issues from a public health perspective, regulates specified businesses and enforces state and local environmental health laws and rules.

The Multnomah County Environmental Health Program is home to Lead Poisoning Prevention services for all of Multnomah County and parts of surrounding counties. Among the services provided by the program is an active clinical blood lead screening program for children and pregnant women. The Lead Program provides capillary (finger-prick) blood lead testing for over 1000 children annually.

As the Lead Screening Clinic On-Call staff you will assist with the clinical screening in the following areas:
Pick up and return testing materials and equipment from the Environmental Health office in NE Portland (typically around 1 hour before clinic start)
Arrive at clinic location 30 minutes before clinic start, greet host at site and set up clinic
Calibrate LeadCare II testing equipment
Perform capillary testing of children and pregnant women
Run analysis of samples on LeadCare II testing units
Interact with families, child, parents in a professional manner
Provide testing results with basic explanation of lead level and follow up actions as necessary
Ideal candidates will be able to communicate basic lead prevention information to parents in Spanish and English
