The City Surveyor is a Professional Land Surveyor in the Engineering Division of the Public Works Department. The position plans, supervises, and administers the operations of the Survey section, performs professional land surveying duties in the review and approval of subdivision and partition plats, property line adjustments, records of surveys and deeds. This position receives direction from the City Engineer, or designee, and the work requires the effective utilization of personnel, the establishment and adherence to work schedules and responsibility for the accuracy and completeness of work performed.

The qualified candidate will have progressively responsible field and office survey work experience and must demonstrate thorough knowledge of survey principles, practices, and regulations; trigonometry and analytical geometry applied to surveying; use of surveying instruments, equipment, and computer applications; ability to research, record, and maintain survey data including skilled proficiency in drafting, drawing, mapping, and other methods to maintain complex survey records. Must possess excellent communication and time management skills, have two years of supervision experience, and be currently registered as Professional Land Surveyor with the State of Oregon.

The essential functions of this position include but are not limited to:•Serve as official City Surveyor and apply Oregon State Professional Land Surveyor seal on necessary documents.
•Responsible for the overall effectiveness, efficiency, and accuracy of the City's survey field work and mapping.
•Maintain positive public relations for the City Surveyor's office.
•Perform full supervisory function of assigned staff, including developing work plans and schedules; employee development and training; employee selection, performance review, and discipline.
•Research various survey related issues, including ownership, legal descriptions, quantity and shape of right-of-way, City owned property, and private property. Stamps boundary surveys to be recorded at the County Surveyors office.
•Responsible for the checking and/or writing of property legal descriptions for the City.
•Review all platting within the City for compliance with state law and local codes and standards.
•Responsible for the City's horizontal and vertical control networks.
•Perform mathematical checks and coordinate survey requirements for subdivision and partition plats, property line adjustments, records of surveys, and deeds.
•Develop and review long-range surveying projects including surveying monument establishing and perpetuation, bench mark establishment, and satellite monuments.

What are the minimum qualifications? •Must pass the pre-employment background check.
•Must have an Oregon Driver license and meet the City of Salem's driving standards.
•Graduation from a four-year college or university with major course work in surveying or civil engineering, and four years of progressively responsible field and office survey experience, including two years of supervisory experience is required.
•Registration as a Professional Land Surveyor by the State of Oregon at time of appointment.
