The SOREL color and materials designer is responsible for managing individual footwear color and material design projects from initial concept through sales samples for various Womens, Mens and Kids footwear projects. This is an opportunity to join a high velocity footwear brand and be a part of a creative and innovative footwear product engine.
New Material Concepts:
•Work with Merchandising / Design / Development teams to review upcoming “blue-sky” needs for product concepts
•Create action plan and timeline with team for follow through.
•Review product briefs to identify material / concepts to be explored
•Ability to apply and work with materials that meet brand needs and commercial opportunities
•Select materials based on their aesthetic, functional properties, cost, and support of the intended design
•Explore new materials opportunities and provide alternative material sources for better pricing without comprise of material integrity.
•Work closely with Product Design and Merchandising to procure critical design information related to the material of a style or product category.
•Contribute to the creation of leather/textile palettes each season
New Color Concepts:
•Assist Color/Materials Manager in developing color palettes twice a year for the product lines. Work up all color combinations for product in the seasonal line.
•Define and execute against seasonal color initiatives. Apply color palette to seasonal product lines. Work closely with other members of the Product Creation Teams, planning and merchandising the seasonal footwear lines. Design and spec product utilizing Adobe Creative Suite to meet timelines and cost parameters.
•Research worldwide marketplace for trends in new color and materials inspiration. Present findings and recommendations to category Product Creation Team. May require attending special trend or trade shows.
•Provide and/or coordinate technical support for product or illustrations as needed for linelist, catalog, hangtags or printed product information for merchandising/design, sales representatives, buyers, customers and/or management review meetings.
•Collaborate with an international staff of people and effectively interface and communicate to create a merchandisable line of footwear.
•College degree with course work in art, graphic design, textiles, or related experience.
•Three to five years experience in footwear industry (lifestyle, outdoor and/or athletic) or a combination of equivalent education and or related experience.
•Experience with Asian materials development.
•Familiarity with product manufacturing processes and limitations, including materials, fabrics, plastics and pigments.
•Knowledge of leather, textile constructions, synthetic, rubber, EVA types, footwear construction types and end uses.
•Thorough knowledge of art and design basics with a clear understanding of visual design concepts, including color merchandising, color compatibility and color placement.
•Trend forecast experience and the ability to clearly communicate this to a mixed audience, either verbally or visually.
