Technical Writer

Puppet, Inc., Portland, OR

Job - Technology

Close Date: 11/15/2019

Hi, I’m Helen Ivory, Senior Director of Global Knowledge Management at Puppet.

I’m looking for a Portland-based Technical Writer to join our team to be that one voice across all of our education content.

At Puppet, the Global Knowledge Management team is a geographically dispersed team of learning professionals. We are dedicated to providing the right information to the right person in the right way at the right time. We develop, deliver, and maintain technical education programs and sales enablement programs. These programs are composed of instructor-led courseware, videos, podcasts, eLearning modules, webinars, and other print and multimedia assets. Across all content a consistent voice - one that is clear, direct, concise, and, of course, grammatically correct - is critical. The spoken and written words should supplement the visual learning content - not distract from it.This is not a documentation position. Another team at Puppet is responsible for technical publications such as user guides.

As a Technical Writer on the Global Knowledge Management team at Puppet, you will:

Write content for all educational content and promotion of that content, such as newsletter articles and blog posts.
Assist your peers in becoming better writers by editing their writing to ensure a consistent voice and grammatical correctness.
Work with subject matter experts and stakeholders to translate highly technical topics into informative content for all levels of technical proficiency.

Who you will be collaborating with . . .

Engineering, product managers, and UX to stay current on product releases.
Other writers on our Technical Publications, Technical Support, and Marketing teams to ensure consistency across all documentation.
Other Global Knowledge Management team members who are creating sales enablement and product-based learning experiences.

Who are you?

You love writing - technical content, conversational scripts, informative blogs, engaging promotional copy. The pen is mightier than the sword when it’s in your hand.
You are an accurate editor who can deliver feedback effectively while elevating the writer’s skill and building the writer’s confidence.
You are a natural educator who enjoys finding new ways to solve problems and to help make learning accessible and engaging.
You are a dynamic and collaborative player who is adept at building effective cross-functional relationships as well as internal relationships within our geographically distributed team.
You are committed to working in, and fostering, an inclusive, diverse, and respectful culture.

What valuable experience and skills will you bring to the table?
A minimum of two years of technical writing experience
Passionate and knowledgeable about principles of effective technical writing as demonstrated through clear and concise content written to style standards.
Experience learning complex, abstract technology, using a combination of documentation, web research, help from friends and/or strangers, and direct experimentation

Bonus, but not required (shout about it in your application if you have experience)

Experience with education technology such as learning management systems, sales enablement platforms, video services, content development tools, and virtual delivery platforms.
Experience with web development languages such as HTML5, JavaScript, and CSS
Experience with WordPress
