The City of Salem is seeking to hire an Urban Forester (Field Supervisor III) who will coordinate and perform professional/technical work supporting the parks Urban Forestry program. This position will coordinate, develop, manage and implement: maintenance to trees on city property; a comprehensive Salem community forestry management plan to increase and protect the health and quantity of trees within the city; policies, procedures and practices based on thoroughly developed urban forestry principles by the Parks Operations Department; labor resources, equipment and materials needed to complete projects; tree maintenance inventory/management programs; educational programs to involve Salem citizens; draft proposals and reports; represent the department and division on task forces and public meetings; the development and knowledge of employees.
Additionally, this candidate will participate, promote or manage events such as: the Heritage Tree Program; Tree City USA requirements/annual reports; Growth Award applications; Salem Parks and Recreation Advisory Board and Tree subcommittee; Historic Landmarks Commission; Community Forestry Strategic Plan; and Urban Forestry Program.
The qualified candidate will demonstrate having held a leadership position or role that was responsible for coordinating team activities and accountable for the completion of group tasks, knowledgeable of work crew safety regulations, and possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Must be able to perform both field and office work and occasional weekend and evening work.
What are the minimum qualifications?
Must pass the pre-employment background check.
Depending on area of assignment, may be required to pass a drug test (including marijuana).
Must have an Oregon driver license and a driving record that meets the City of Salem's driving standards.
Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in a related field to program assignment (i.e., biology, business management, engineering, environmental sciences, etc.), and four years of supervisory experience in a related field, or any combination of education, experience and training that demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities as listed, and ability to perform the essential job functions.
Must have International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborist certification
Additional education, certifications and/or licenses may be required or preferred depending on the position (and must be maintained throughout employment).
