Do you have an interest in mentoring teen boys coping with adversity? Do you like to work in a diverse and dynamic environment?
PASO, a mid- level security (staff -secure) residential facility is seeking Milieu Counselors to mentor and teach life skills to adolescent boys. The youth are primarily from Latin American countries and occasionally from other areas of the world. They reside in our care, living in a 16- bed residential facility. Our program is designed to help the youth, by creating a secure and therapeutic environment in which the youth, learn the necessary skills to be self-sufficient. Through our residential facility, the youth have access to education, and mental health services onsite; while they are waiting reunification with family, a sponsor or the next steps in their immigration case.
To ensure the safety of the minors in the program, we maintain stricter security measures, such as higher staff to client ratio for supervision. This placement is for youth who require close supervision but do not need placement in a secure facility. Must be comfortable working with potentially adjudicated youth, and in a regulated environment; and be willing to work within the parameters set forth by program licensing guidelines. Must be able to ability to react quickly, and appropriately to the potential challenges involved working in a residential facility.
The ideal candidates will demonstrate compassion, possess a strong sense of ethics and understand the importance of maintaining professional boundaries. They will communicate effectively with the youth, in a tactful and thoughtful manner. The ability to maintain composure during stressful situations is crucial competency in this position.
How can I help? Milieu Counselors can make a meaningful difference by:
Mentoring the youth: Milieu Counselors lead by example, by interacting professionally and respectfully with youth and colleagues. They promote a learning environment, where youth receive help with academics, encouragement in pursing individual interest/hobbies and if needed learn techniques to address or cope with behavioral issues.
Creating a culturally inclusive environment in which the youth can feel supported. Bi-cultural and bilingual speaking applicants are encouraged to apply!
Ensuring the safety of the clients we serve: Milieu Counselors monitor by being present and alert to see and hear the youth (line of sight), to ensure the safety of all participants. Tools such as relevant training, radios, logs and conducting head counts ensure that Milieu Counselor possess the necessary skills to be able to react and respond immediately if the youth need assistance or support.
Supporting the functioning of the program by completing necessary documentation, completing inventories of program supplies/materials, maintaining the cleanliness and order of program property.
Flexible! We have morning, and swing shifts available! Four 10-hr shifts, means you get three days off!
Morning Shift: 7:00am-5:30pm Saturday – Tuesday
Days Off: Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday
Mid Day Shift 10am-8:30pm Wednesday-Saturday
Days Off: Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday
Swing Shift 12:30pm-11pm Saturday – Tuesday
Day Off: Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday
Swing Shift 12:30pm-11pm Thursday – Sunday
Days Off: Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday
Education and Work Experience:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
At least 21 years of age
• High School Diploma
• Minimum of 1 year employment experience in the child welfare field working with children and/or adolescents in a social service setting
• Basic computer skills using Microsoft Word, Excel, databases and Outlook
• Bi-lingual in Spanish and English, written, read and verbal strongly preferred
• ORR experience
• Residential experience
• Knowledge of adolescent developmental issues, trauma, abuse and neglect, substance abuse and dependence, delinquency, peer influence, and related group and individual interventions.
• Pass a DHS criminal history background
• Meet agency driving requirement
• Language testing, if applicable
Starting Pay Rate:
Milieu Counselor: $14.00-$14.32
Bilingual (Spanish) Milieu Counselor: $15.26 - $15.61
