Financial Aid Counselor Position Summary

The primary purpose of this position is to serve as the primary source of financial aid resources for current and prospective students in all aspects of the enrollment process. Duties include working with Admission staff in a proactive manner by contacting prospective students and families, establishing a relationship with current students regarding questions they may have about financial aid and financing the costs of a college education, guiding students and families through all financial aid related processes, and educating and informing students of available options and resources that may be used to pay for college.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

· Bachelor’s degree. Substantial and relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a Bachelor’s degree.
· 2+ years successful experience in college financial aid or other finance or customer service related field. Experience in an educational environment preferred.
· Experienced giving informative and persuasive presentations or the ability to develop effective public speaking skills.
· Must be able to be granted and maintain access to federal databases and processing systems throughout employment. Note: being in default on any student loans will prohibit access to federal systems.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Serve as the primary resource for students and families as they seek creative solutions for financing their college endeavor.
• Meet with a diverse constituency of students in a variety of venues including in person or in person.
• Work with a caseload of students throughout the enrollment cycle up to graduation.
• Build and maintain strong working relationships with students in order to be seen as a credible and reliable resources for them as they pursue a variety of college financing options.
• Proactively reach out to students and families in the recruitment cycle via phone, email. Guide them through the financial aid process and work with them to establish a plan for financing their college education.
• Counsel students on FAFSA by explaining next steps and coaching them through the financial aid acceptance process.
• Meet performance benchmarks and assessment requirements as defined by the AVP of Financial Aid. 45%
2. Complete full-service financial aid processing, including document collection, budgeting, awarding, FAFSA verification and disbursement of student aid funds. 25%
3. Work with co-curricular staff including but not limited to vendor partners, admissions staff, academic advisors, etc., to help with calculation and proper awarding procedures. 10%
4. May be asked to attend recruitment events and meet with students individually and in groups to answer questions, encourage the process, and assist with the recruitment process. 5%
5. Work collaboratively with other departments on campus (Student Accounts, Registrar, Advising, Student Affairs) to advocate for students and assist in the enrollment and retention process. 5%
6. Maintain current knowledge of state, federal, and institutional policies and procedures regulating student aid. 5%
7. Utilize the CRM and Banner for daily transactions, communications, and compliance. 5%
8. Must be able to be granted access to federal databases and processing systems. Must not be in default on any student loans as this will prohibit access to federal systems. At all times

Prospective students and family members, department staff, direct supervisor, vendor partners and various staff from other CU departments.

Scope of Work

Work requires knowledge of institutional policies and practices, as well as the ability to work independently in order to develop relationships with prospective and current students. Supports the daily operations and goals of
the department and follows standard operating procedures throughout course of work. Limited supervision received; exercises independent judgement on matters of moderate risk.

Working Conditions

Involves occasional travel during varying weather and traffic conditions. Office environment.

Minimum Physical Requirements

· Able to perform repetitive typing and keyboarding activities.
· Able to speak on the telephone for prolonged periods of time.
· Able to effectively participate in two-way conversation, as well as make content presentations to small and large groups of constituents.
· Able to transition between sites and meeting locations in a timely manner.
· Able to lift and carry up to 25 lbs on an occasional basis.
· Able to lift, pull, grasp, stoop and reach within an office environment.
· Able to sit and stand for prolonged periods of time.

Minimum Requirements (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

· Able to demonstration outstanding customer service and a commitment to student learning. Demonstrated concern for delivering quality service to students, families, educational partner and other university personnel.
· Strong interpersonal skills. Able to communicate effectively with warmth, sensitivity, and understanding when working with administrative colleagues, students, parents, faculty, college personnel and program associates.
· Clear, correct, and effective written and verbal communication using the English language. Ability to explain policies and procedures one-on-one or in group presentations.
· Able to interpret, apply and explain complex federal and institutional policies to students, staff, and faculty.
· Able to apply strong critical and logical thinking, good judgement and effective problem solving.
· Excellent computer and technology skills, including use of all Microsoft Office products, filing systems (paper and electronic), and relational databases.
· General knowledge of and the ability to use relational databases and ERP systems including integration of self-service, learning management systems, Microsoft Office suite products, and degree audit systems in a complex university setting.
· Able to take initiative and conceive new ideas that will streamline and make processes more effective for students.
· Able to work independently as well as on a team. Strong collaboration skills.
· Effective task and time management abilities. Ability to manage multiple projects while also attending to daily/weekly/monthly and annual tasks.
· Able to maintain confidentiality and handle confidential information with discretion, good judgement and tact.
