The City of Salem's Police Department is hiring for Lateral Police Officer.

The Salem Police Department is a full service professional agency with 190 sworn positions and a full complement of support staff. The department is the 2nd largest municipal agency in the state of Oregon, and is located in the capital city of Salem, with a population of over 160,000 residents. Our agency has a full complement of special teams and units to include: SWAT, Bomb Squad, Riot Team, Tactical Negotiations Team, Problem Oriented Police Team (POP) Narcotics Unit, DEA Task Force, Detectives, Motorcycle Unit, Mountain Bike Unit, School Resource Officers, Crash Reconstructionist, Computer Forensics, Mental Health Unit, Training Division, Trauma Team, Civil Investigations Team, and Patrol.

We have a fleet of state-of-the-art patrol cars with the latest computer technology, camera, license plate reader systems, and weapons platforms. As a Salem Police Officer, you will be issued your needed equipment to include: uniforms, weapons (handgun and rifles), boots, duty gear, iPhones, and more.

Centrally located, Salem is 1 hour from the ocean beaches to the west, the Cascade Mountains to the east, and the city of Portland to the north. The City offers an excellent compensation and benefits package. As part of total compensation package, the City may consider providing qualified candidates with leave time from date of hire. Starting salary step will be based on years of qualified experience.

Minimum Qualifications: •Must already possess Police Basic Certification by the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) or out-of-state equivalent.
•Currently employed and certified applicants from the state of Oregon do not need to take the NTN Frontline National Test or retake the ORPAT.
•Must pass the NTN Frontline National Test and submit valid test results to the City through NTN's website (valid test results are results that are current or no more than one year old from time of application).
•Must pass the ORPAT and submit valid test results to the City through NTN's website (valid test results are results that are current or no more than six months old from time of application). If you already have a current ORPAT score, you may submit it instead of taking ORPAT again by attaching it to your online City application. Out of state candidates: If you have a valid and current PAT test from another State, you may submit your score by attaching it to your online City application, so long as it is no more than six months old from time of application.
•Currently employed with a minimum of three years of full time employment as a police officer (jail and most federal law enforcement experience will not be counted toward the three year minimum).
•Possess and maintain a valid Oregon class C driver's license or other state equivalent and have a driving record that meets the City of Salem's standards.

Additional incentives: The City of Salem offers 2%-10% premium pay for a combination of DPSST certification levels, training, and college education. Police Officers who have been with the City for 10 years receive a 3% longevity increase.

There is also 5% bilingual pay incentive for language skills in Spanish, Russian, Vietnamese, Thai, Lowland Lao, Cambodian, Highland Lao (Mien), Hmong, or certification in American Sign Language. Qualified bilingual applicants are encouraged to apply.

Career police officers with the Salem Police Department have the opportunity to work in a wide variety of specialized units or special teams. Extra duty pay is paid for SWAT (2.5%), HAZMAT (2.5%), Field Training Officer (5%), K-9 (5%), K-9 decoy (2.5%), and TNT (2.5%).
