This position will be filled at either the Paralegal I or II level depending on experience and qualifications. The distinctions between the levels are the complexity and responsibility of assignments and the amount of lead direction received and given.
Paralegal I: $27.21 - $37.00
Paralegal II: $29.39 - $39.98
Under the supervision of attorneys within the Office of Metro Attorney, the Paralegal provides paralegal assistance to the Metro Attorney, Senior Metro Attorneys, and Assistant Attorneys on (a) matters related to planning, permitting, and obtaining approvals for projects to implement the Metro Parks and Natural Areas levy, with emphasis on state and local land use laws and planning documents, and federal environmental and natural resource regulations; (b) real estate transactions; (c) litigation; and (d) related general legal matters. The Paralegal assists in the land use projects by obtaining project and property information; researching prior land use conditions of approval and applicable codes; assisting in preparing and processing permit applications, and handling real estate and general legal issues. This position requires an understanding of land use and real estate issues, great attention to detail, an ability to manage deadlines and push projects forward, and a significant use of independent judgment and action. It involves communication with government agency representatives, landscape architectures, design, planning and environmental consultants, attorneys, surveyors, commercial and residential property owners, and brokers.
Duties are performed primarily in an office environment while sitting at a desk or computer terminal, although the employee will also frequently be required to visit potential projects sites or properties including on rough terrain and in inclement weather. Employee may travel to local jurisdictions to conduct research, including permit and planning research, and /or interview staff regarding specific properties. This position works closely with the real estate negotiators, parks and planning staff, and property managers in the Parks and Nature Department to ensure consistency and compliance with Metro policy and procedures. The Paralegal may provide litigation support to attorneys on wide variety of substantive matters.

• Bachelor's degree, Associates degree of applied science (AAS), or ABA-approved paralegal training degree or certificate and either:
o a minimum of two (2) years of paralegal experience (for the Paralegal I) or
o a minimum of three (3) years of paralegal experience (for the Paralegal II)
• Or any combination of education and experience which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job.
