Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve is looking for Environmental Educators to join our CAPRA Certified Parks and Recreation Department.

An Environmental Educator for the City of Hillsboro Parks and Recreation Department plays an important role in connecting community members to the amazing natural resources in their own backyards. This position works directly with kids as part of the Jackson Bottom team to connect, inspire, and engage each child with nature around them. At Jackson Bottom you will deliver nature-based programs in the field, at area schools, and at community events. When school lets out, the fun really amps up. With more intensive week long camp experiences, your creativity can make a kid’s “best day ever.” Together we can help kids develop their own lens to really see the natural world around them!
The Ideal Candidate—Is This You?
The person who will be happy and successful as an Environmental Educator at Jackson Bottom is creative, committed, and actively demonstrates inclusion and respect for diverse voices, backgrounds, and ideas. The ideal candidate also has experience working with kids and a passion for the natural world; knows how to take curriculum and apply their own style to engage and inspire learners; and is flexible. A Bachelor’s degree in an environmental related field is preferred.
The Environmental Educator will report to the environmental Education Program Supervisor and collaborate with other Jackson Bottom staff.
General Statement of Duties
Typical duties include but are not limited to the following:
• Teaching field-based and traveling (in-the-schools) educational programs.
• Leading camps and groups offered during the Spring and Summer season.
• Assisting with special community events, as needed.
• Enforcing department rules and regulations.
• Ensuring that safety and security procedures are followed by participants.
• Communicating effectively with participants, parents, and the general public.
• Researching and developing educational programs and resources for schools, youth, or community groups on topics of environmental interest.
• Working with colleagues on the design and delivery of educational programs.
• Teaching groups and interpreting the natural environment for them on-site by leading guided walks and answering questions.
• Supervising and working with volunteers.
• Evaluating the effectiveness of programs and reporting results to supervisor.
• Assisting in keeping facilities and equipment in a clean and orderly condition.
• Reporting accidents and incidents immediately to the Environmental Education Program Supervisor or other staff as appropriate.
The principal function of an employee in this class is to participate in the instruction and organization of City recreational programs. The work is performed under the supervision and direction of an assigned supervisor, but some leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. This class is distinguished from the class of Recreation Instructor I by lead worker duties. Lead worker responsibilities are exercised over employees in the classes of Recreation Instructor I and Recreation Program Aide. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with the assigned supervisor, other City employees, program participants, and the general public. The principal duties of this class are performed at recreation facilities. This is a non-exempt position.
Acceptable Experience and Training
• High School Diploma or GED; or
• Any combination of experience and training which provides the equivalent scope of knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.
• Bachelor’s degree in an environmental related field is preferred.
