The AVP/Controller provides accounting and financial reporting leadership and oversight to the College and ensures compliance with applicable Federal and State regulations. The Controller is responsible for the development and implementation of accounting policies, procedures and controls, management of accounting functions, financial reporting and oversight of business operations. This position directs the activities of the Business Office, Treasury, Student and Departmental Account Services, as well as the outsourced Bookstore, Mail Room, and Print Shop.
What You'll Do
Operational Administration (35% of the time)
Serve as resource and strategic partner for the CFO, Vice President, President, College Board of Trustees, and campus leadership for all areas of responsibility.
Direct and monitor the College's financial and accounting activities in accordance with best business practices, generally accepted accounting principles (including FASB and NACUBO) and other higher education standards and regulations.
Provide leadership for ensuring accurate and strategic financial reporting and analysis.
Develop and maintain accounting and fiscal standards, policies, and procedures, as well as systems for encouraging compliance.
Provide leadership, consultation, and training to the College community regarding business services.
Ensure the integrity of the internal financial control structure of the College and provide effective financial monitoring and reporting services.
Protect College assets by ensuring they are used according to policies implemented by the Board and Executive Council.
Financial Reporting (35%)
Responsible for developing and implementing financial policies, monitoring and reporting results, accounting and reporting of endowment and charitable trust investment performance, and preparing or overseeing the preparation of internal and external financial reports.
Monitor cash flows and implements wire transfers to invest excess short term operating cash balances according to plans developed for and approved by the CFO & VP for Operations.
Prepare and/or review the annual financial statements, annual 403(b) financial statements, quarterly investment reports, all government filings, quarterly Audit and Finance Committee reports, tax law compliance requirements, and other reports as necessary.
Manage the Purchasing Card Program and monitor the performance of outsourced activities.
Direct the receipting and disbursement of all College moneys with an annual budget in excess of $100 million.
Primary contact for external auditors and tax advisors; oversee the preparation and review of all documents requested.
Leadership and Management (30%)
Directly responsible for the selection, training, supervision, evaluation, performance management, and discipline of the department employees.
Provide leadership and strategic direction for department with a focus on the College's culture, mission and vision.
Encourage and build mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among employees.
Establish long-range objectives and specify the strategies and actions to achieve them.
Effectively build and work with diverse teams.
Bachelor's degree (preferably in accounting or finance) and seven years relevant experience.
CPA, CMA or equivalent required (inactive license accepted).
Proven skill in managing effectively through others while fostering an environment of customer service.
Extensive knowledge of financial operations processes and best practices.
Extensive knowledge of accounting best practices.
Demonstrated financial acumen, critical thinking, judgment and decision-making, including the ability to weigh short and long-term costs and benefits of a potential action.
Excellent written and oral communication skills, with ability to present complex financial issues to stakeholders across the College.
Strong computer, interpersonal and communication skills.
Nice to Haves
