The City of Portland is seeking two Engineers – Traffic specialty in the Signals and Street Lighting (SSL) Division of the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT). Traffic Engineers in SSL typically serve at the District Engineer level and work collaboratively with Engineering Associates and/or Senior Engineering Associates to address the needs in a geographic region of the City.
About the position: Engineers with a Traffic Specialty are responsible for performing complex traffic engineering work involving the application of advanced technical engineering knowledge to the design and operation of the City's transportation system.
Duties for Engineers within SSL may include:
Designing and reviewing plans and specifications for traffic control devices, transportation infrastructure, traffic signals, street lights, and ITS systems;
Authorizing changes to the City's transportation system performed by in-house work crews
Providing project management and/or reviewing and monitoring traffic design and analysis work by outside consultants, including development-initiated work as related to traffic;
Managing construction or maintenance projects;
Performing and/or reviewing traffic analyses;
Selecting traffic signal phasing and timing to maximize efficiency and safety for all modes of transportation
Creating as-builts and evaluating SSL assets
Investigating and resolving traffic safety and operations problems
Preparing and delivering presentations of technical data and results; and
Serving as an expert witness.
Additionally, this position may oversee, coordinate, and review the work of support staff, technical, and junior level engineering staff, and inspect field installations by contractors and city personnel.
An Ideal Candidate: The Traffic Engineer works with a broad range of customers and is expected to deliver a high level of customer service and to carry out their individual responsibilities with initiative, independence, and creativity while exercising sound professional problem-solving skills. An ideal candidate will have experience with traffic signals and street lighting, an understanding of traffic engineering fundamentals, and the ability to problem-solve.
About the Division: The SSL Division partners with other PBOT engineering divisions to deliver capital improvement projects and partners with PBOT Public Works Permitting staff to review and approve proposed private developments. The SSL Division also works independently to operate and maintain our existing signal and street lighting infrastructure and assets.
