Software Developer

Marmoset LLC, Portland, OR

Job - Technology

Close Date: 09/13/2019

Marmoset is seeking a Software Developer.

Marmoset is seeking a full stack Software Developer with experience in Ruby on Rails and Javascript. The ideal candidate has a team-first mindset, collaborating with the Scrum team and other stakeholders to solve problems, design new features and deliver solid technical solutions.

What you should know: We’ve got a Tech Team consisting of developers, a Product Owner, and a Team Lead (whose area of expertise is product, not writing code). We’re all about Scrum. Our app supports critical business functions for both our internal staff and our clients: from sales order process to music catalog curation, to our ecommerce platform... and so much more. This means it’s a lot to maintain, and offers lots of opportunity to do cool new things.

It’s critical for the person in this role to be able to work well both independently and collaboratively, as we’re a self-organizing team that moves quickly together. Giving and asking for help is more important around here than a “knowing everything” mindset. What we lack in traditional engineering team structure and ways, we make up for with the freedom to be truly agile, self-organizing and creative. This role will work onsite with the team at Marmoset HQ in Portland, Oregon.

Our main focus for the next 12 months: 1) Product-focused innovation by developing new features and improvements to level up the experience for both client and internal staff users, 2) Building towards a more modern stack and flexible architecture to support sustained growth.

We are currently on the latest version of Rails (5.2+) and Ruby (2.6.1), migrating from Backbone/jQuery to React (16.8+) and developing an API using GraphQL.

This opportunity includes the following technical requirements:

A deep knowledge or Ruby on (and off) Rails
Proficient in JavaScript (ES5/ES6)
A sound understanding of business logic as it applies to development and architecture
Possess a solid methodology for developing and managing clean, readable, maintainable code
Proficient in HTML & CSS
Working knowledge of open-source database server technology (PostgreSQL, MySQL)
Proficient in version control (we use git)
Working knowledge of agile/scrum methodologies
Writing unit, integration, and E2E tests (we use Rspec and Cypress)

Nice to have:

Experience with GraphQL/Apollo
Experience with React or any modern frameworks/libraries (Vue, Angular, etc.)
Experience with ActiveAdmin
Database Design

Third-party services we use:

AWS S3 (for asset storage)
New Relic & Scout (for app monitoring)
Jira (for project management)

Basics: You love what you do and you’re looking to do something rewarding that makes a difference in the world. Or maybe you’re sick of the grind at a bigger company and are seeking a refreshing culture where quality of life and people’s lives matter the most. If this sounds like you, keep reading.

Personality: Self starter with a contagious “can do” attitude. Thick skin. Able to regularly accept failure and/or idea rejection and grow from it. Unflappable: succeeds in a highly creative, fast paced, sometimes distracting open office environment. Calm and cool under pressure and you are rarely ruffled by stress. You play well with others and communicate openly in a constructive, respectful way when you’re not in agreement with something.

Abilities: Excellent communicator, strong researcher, attentive listener, fast learner. You have the ability to prioritize based on value and timelines. You’re proactive, resourceful and are able to dig in and figure things out. You can see the forest through the trees -- able to focus on the project at hand, in addition to the big picture.

Experience: Minimum of one year with Ruby on Rails and JavaScript. You’ve been on a team of developers where your team player mentality contributed to the group’s success. You’re a forward thinker who considers how your work will affect others, even years after you’re gone. Ideally, you’ve worked on a product that you’ve helped to maintain, versus only building short-term products for clients in an agency setting, etc.

Passion: You have a heart for innovation and for constantly taking things to the next level. You love collaboration, teamwork, and thrive in a fun, familial, highly creative environment. Passion for music, arts and creative is a plus.

Pay: This is an entry-level to mid-level level role with compensation DOE.
