The Gateway Center for Domestic Violence is a resource center for individuals who are experiencing or have experienced domestic violence. Reliable and safe childcare is a huge barrier for parents when accessing the support and services they need. The free childcare inside the center offers a safe and stable place for children ages 6 weeks to 10 years old to stay and play while parents receive the numerous services Gateway has to offer. While a family is in crisis, a child faces turmoil and the lack of a safe environment. Therefore, being here for families creates a lasting impact on their lives. Beyond this basic childcare, you can become a role model to children who could benefit from a positive individual in their lives just by playing with them. You would be making a lasting impact on their lives while having fun – learning to interact with each child in a way that supports their needs and just being there for families in a time of crisis. Collaborate with staff about activities, creating a clean environment for children to play, and so much more. Past volunteers have enjoyed how eager the children are to connect with them, and the diverse ages and backgrounds of the children. They also have enjoyed creating those special bonds with children who come regularly and being there as an extra support for families. If you are consistent, eager to learn, love interacting and playing with a variety of ages of children, and creating lasting relationships, we would love to tell you more! Commitment: We ask you to give 3 hours per week, Monday Friday 9:00-12:00 or 1:00-4:00, for a minimum of 3 months to gain valuable skills working with a variety of children and get training in child development and crisis intervention.
