The Hillsboro School District and Big Brothers Big Sisters are launching a youth mentoring and support program for 9th grade Latino young men in the Hillsboro School District this fall. The purpose of this program is to, through various strategies, increase positive school connection and belonging, improve academic outcomes, and ultimately increase graduation and college-going rates for program participants. One of those strategies is the mentoring component and this is where BBBS comes in. We are seeking male volunteers who can be a consistent caring adult friend to spend one-on-one time with the student one hour a week acting as a friend. Minimum commitment is 12 months–includes Summer break. This is not a classroom program and it’s not tutoring. Of course, some students will talk with their Bigs about class, or ask for help with homework, but it’s really all about friendship and guidance.
