October’s Breakfast for Champions, sponsored by Portland State University School of Business, focused on the topic of targeted universalism. Our speaker for the morning was john a. powell, Director of the Othering and Belonging Institute and Professor of Law, African American, and Ethnic Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. Professor powell led participants through a two-hour, hands-on, interactive workshop by using a case study and providing examples to help participants apply universalism into their own work.
Targeted Universalism is an approach that supports the needs of the particular, while reminding us that we are all part of the social fabric. It sheds the one-size-fits all formula and creates policies that are outcome-oriented and excludes no one.
Breakfast of Champions is an event for Partners in Diversity members only. If you would like to become a member, please contact us or visit our membership page for more information.
