All ages are invited to learn Japanese Obon (pronounced O-bone) dances in time for participating at this month’s Asian Celebration and Obon & Taiko Drumming Festival on Saturday, July 31st at Alton Baker Park.

Free Obon dance classes are offered every Thursday between 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Sheldon Community Center through July. Come to any of the classes to learn and practice easy Obon dances, and then join others to dance in large concentric circles at the festival on July 31st.

The dances are traditional to 21st century Japanese and Japanese American folk dances performed at festivals to honor one’s ancestors and especially, to celebrate community support.  All ages can learn these easy dances performed with hand motions, fans, hats, and other accessories.

Registration is required for this free class. For more information or to register, contact Sheldon Community Center at 541-682-5312.
