Volunteer Reading Mentors empower students with learning challenges to succeed!

The Shadow Project is recruiting volunteers to become in-person Reading Mentors in Portland, Oregon area school districts, specifically East and Southeast Portland.

As a Reading Mentor, you’ll work one-on-one with students with learning challenges, motivating them to set and achieve weekly reading goals using assistive reading technology and an extensive audiobook library. You’ll mentor in a public school classroom during the regular school day.

We are looking for volunteers (18+ years old) who can commit to 2 hours per week for a minimum of 3 months (during the following cycles: Fall 2022, Winter 2022, Spring 2023). Shifts are either in the mornings or afternoon during school hours, throughout the regular school year. Currently, we need volunteers who will be available to volunteer in East and Southeast Portland.

Thank you!

NOTE: As COVID-19 Requirements state-wide evolve, we are asking our in-person volunteers to please be vaccinated, and be able to show proof of vaccine status as requested. We encourage and support applicants from all backgrounds to join us in our work. This includes — but is in no way limited to — people experiencing disability, BIPOC individuals, and LGBTQIA2S+.
